The concept of "liminal space" originated from Arnold van Gennep and Victor Turner. Van Gennep's „rites de passage" (1909) explored liminality through societal rites of passage, distinguishing between separation, transition, and incorporation rites. Turner expanded on this in the 1960s, emphasizing the temporary suspension or reversal of social structures. He highlighted the significance of peripheral locations, geographically or culturally.
Liminal spaces are thus states or places of transition and change that not only open up new perspectives and possibilities but also enable profound personal and social transformations. In these transitional phases, existing norms can be questioned, and innovative ideas and behaviors can be tested, ultimately contributing to the renewal and further development of societies.
